Benefits
Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses
OPC (oligomeric procyanidolic complexes) is found in grape seed and pine bark. PCO extracts have been marketed in France for decades as treatment for venous and capillary disorders (eg, retinopathies, venous insufficiency, vascular fragility). Red wine contains PCO, and when used in association with a nonatherogenic diet, may reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Nutritional
Grape seed oil contains nutritionally useful essential fatty acids and tocopherols (vitamin E). V. coignetiae also contains vitamins A, C, and F. Dietary grape seed tannins and procyanidins (polyphenol oligomers) also are reported.
Antioxidant
The antioxidant activity of grape seed extract has been tested clinically. It was shown that the extract elevated total antioxidant activity in the serum.
Other uses
Grape seed has been shown to have antibacterial activity, and to be a safe and
effective hand-cleansing agent. Grape seed also is effective in the prevention of dental caries. Grape seed also may be cytoprotective (protects against cancer). Early studies show some promise, but more research needs to be done in order to fully understand the benefits of grape seed.
Safety
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to grape seed
Dosage
For use as a general antioxidant much as you might use vitamin E or vitamin C, 50 mg of OPCs daily are sufficient. A higher dosage of 150 to 300 mg daily is generally used for treating specific diseases such as varicose veins.
